Property Details

Camp Hopson is a long established, fully trading department store located on Northbrook Street in the heart of Newbury town centre and is one of the town’s most recognisable retail landmarks.

The business was formed from the merger of two historic family enterprises: Joseph Hopson’s furniture business, founded in 1854, and Alfred Camp’s Drapery Bazaar, established in 1886. The two families became linked in 1920, when Paul Hopson married Norah Camp, and the businesses formally united shortly afterwards to create Camp Hopson, combining furniture, fashion, and household goods under one name.

Over the decades, the store grew in scale and reputation, famously installing Newbury’s first escalator in 1972, a notable milestone in the town’s retail history. After more than five generations of family ownership, Camp Hopson became part of the Morleys Stores group in 2014, with investment focused on modernising the store while preserving its strong local identity.

Today, Camp Hopson continues to trade successfully as a key anchor store in Newbury, representing a retail heritage that spans more than 170 years.
